For the final phase of the painting, I took a light wash of blue paint and washed it over the entire lower third of the painting to tie his jeans to the background grass and to soften this areas as it's not the center of interest. I also darkened the grass under the subject to anchor the painting and give it more depth.
Wow, it's beautiful, Rachel. I bet he's going to love it.
ReplyDeleteAmazing, Rachel! I love this- it's such a personal painting- a man with his man's best friend. love.
ReplyDeleteThanks you guys : ) I always breath a sigh of relief when a commission is finished and the patron is happy!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you charge for commissions like these? I would love to have one of my husband - they are probably too expensive?
ReplyDeleteLucy -
ReplyDeleteI charge $2/square inch for a single subject and simple background. Each additional figure is $50 extra. I do offer interest free payment plans!
This turned out beautifully, Rachel. You managed to capture the expressions of both man and dog extremely well.
ReplyDeleteOne question if I may..by charging by the sq. inch I'd be concerned that some customers might request 5"x7" portraits to keep the price down.:( Do you have a minimum size requirement?

ReplyDeleteSometimes I'll take smaller commissions if I'm not too busy. But my prices on commissions go up in November and December because I get so busy with them.
I know this family, the patron is a childhood friend of mine. She is extremely happy and her husband is going to love this. I am scrambling to find just the right photo of my girls to send you too! Beautiful...beautiful
ReplyDeleteThank you Lynn! I'd love to paint for you.

Rachel, My husband was speechless on Christmas day when he opend up this painting of him and Brittany. She rode everywhere in Don's truck, we loved her dearly. This was my favorite picture of them. It is hung where we can see it daily, family and friends our in awe over it. Now my husband wants to commission a painting of me with our two cats, I'm working on that. I was so blessed to have found you Rachel, thank you again.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless, Bonnie
